Jean Paul Gaultier Discovery Set
Description
Eight Le Male and Le Beau fragrances in one box, from the 1995 original to the newest Le Beau flankers. Le Male, composed by Francis Kurkdjian, made lavender, mint and vanilla one of the best-known pairings in men's fragrance; Le Beau, from Quentin Bisch and Sonia Constant in 2019, answered it with bergamot, coconut and tonka. Between them the two lines now run from fresh and green to dense and honeyed, and several of the flankers are closer than their names suggest. Testing them together is the quickest way to learn which ones you actually like, and it makes a generous gift for anyone who already owns one of the bottles.
What's Inside
Eight 1mL samples:
- Le Male: the 1995 original by Francis Kurkdjian. Lavender, mint and cardamom over a warm vanilla and tonka base.
- Ultra Male: pear, lavender and mint over cinnamon and clary sage, finishing on black vanilla and amber. Sweeter and louder than Le Male.
- Le Male Le Parfum: cardamom, then lavender and iris over vanilla and woods. Smoother and more powdery, the dressiest of the Le Male group.
- Le Male Elixir: lavender and mint over vanilla and benzoin, settling into honey, tonka and tobacco. The densest, sweetest one in the set.
- Le Beau: the 2019 original. Bergamot, coconut and tonka; creamy and tropical.
- Le Beau Le Parfum: pineapple, iris, ginger and cypress over coconut, then tonka, sandalwood and ambergris. Richer and fruitier than Le Beau.
- Le Beau Flower Edition: kumquat and lemon over violet leaf and geranium, on cashmeran, tonka and patchouli. Greener and more aromatic.
- Le Beau Paradise Garden: aquatic notes, mint, ginger and greenery over salty coconut and green fig, finishing on sandalwood and tonka. The freshest of the eight.
How To Use a Discovery Set
Each 1mL sample comes in a 2mL vial filled halfway, so the vial will look half full. That is the correct amount, and it gives you roughly 15 sprays. Every vial is labeled with the fragrance name.
Wear one fragrance a day, on skin rather than a paper strip, and give it the whole day. The first ten minutes are the loudest and least representative part of any fragrance; judge it at hour three. Once you have a shortlist of two, wear them on opposite wrists and compare. Start with Le Male and Le Beau so you have the two reference points, then move through the flankers.
